Why Camel?
An Unexpected Option
“ Now John himself had a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.” -- Matthew 3:4
When you think of fiber options, camel may not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, both the outer and down layers of Bactrian camel fiber have been used for thousands of years!
Camels naturally shed their fiber in clumps that include both layers.
The outer layer is coarse and has been used to make rope, rugs, carpet, etc.
The down under layer is considered luxurious. Its thermostatic properties provide insulation, and it has a micron count comparable to cashmere at 15-22, but with a much lower risk of felting. It is light, soft, and has a little elasticity.
Both layers can be blended for coarser garments, such as coats.
The color, depending on the age and region of the camel, ranges from white to a darker brown, but is most often a lovely gold.
Perhaps camel is not something you have considered before, but it’s worth consideration!
